What Causes a Gas Leak?

Gas leaks — including propane gas leaks — often result from negligence. In other words, something was done, or wasn’t done, that compromised safety.

Examples of high-profile accidents resulting from gas leaks include:

  • Pipelines: In addition to the San Bruno gas explosion that made international headlines in 2010, there have been dozens of pipeline explosions across the nation since the 1960s. Many of these were pipeline explosions caused by a gas leak that injured workers and residents near the pipelines.
  • Chemical plants and refineries: Sometimes flammable gas or hazardous chemicals escaping from open valves in refineries can lead to massive explosions when ignited. In 2005, an explosion at the third-largest refinery in the U.S., BP’s Texas City refinery, killed 15 workers and injured 170. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) fined BP for hundreds of safety violations, and the company was charged with criminal violations of federal environmental laws. Injuries from gas leaks at chemical plants and refineries similar to BP’s occur throughout the nation, harming workers and nearby homeowners.
  • Hydro fracking: Scientists believe that gas leaking during the hydro fracking process at resource shale sites can impact air quality and health. Leaks of methane and benzene and other emissions can injure workers and residents near large shale areas such as Eagle Ford Shale, Barnett Shale and Marcellus Shale.
