On March 11, 2019, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to Nairobi, Kenya, crashed minutes into the flight. All 157 passengers and flight crew were killed.
The airplane was a Boeing 737 MAX 8, a model unveiled about two years ago. It was soon realized that this same aircraft was involved in the Lion Air flight that crashed into the Java Sea in October 2018, less than five months earlier, killing all 189 passengers and flight crew on board.
Soon after, airlines worldwide started grounding Boeing 737 MAX 8 airliners.
The flight take-off appeared to be normal. But soon after, only six minutes into the flight, the plan nose-dived and crashed.
According to sensors, the pilots followed instructions for disengaging the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS). This system pulls down the plane’s nose if a risk is detected. But the pilots’ efforts were not enough.
