Zantac (Ranitidine) is Causing Cancer
Pulled From Shelves, But Millions Have Already Been Exposed
Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Agosto, Aziz & Stogner attorneys are currently reviewing claims of past Zantac (Ranitidine) users who have been diagnosed with cancer.
Millions suffer from heartburn every single day, and many turned to Zantac or its generic equivalent “Ranitidine” which was sold but Walmart’s Equate brand or CVS’s Health Store to get them through the day. Research now shows that the drug is linked to a variety of different cancers. These items have now been pulled from store shelves by order of the government, and many of the former users are trying to make sense of how this happened.
Zantac has been linked in numerous studies to cancer because of reported contamination by the chemical N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) found in the drug. NDMA is considered a “probable human carcinogen” by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). NDMA typically is found in drugs, but only in low, harmless levels. But Zantac and Ranitidine were found to contain levels of NDMA above what is considered safe.
The Recall History
Based on this research, the FDA announced its mandatory recall in April 2020 including medicines that had the active ingredient, Ranitidine. The Zantac recall is not new. A voluntary recall was issued by Sandoz Inc & Apotex Corporation for Ranitidine products beginning September 2019. Then the mandatory recall began in April 2020. Based on
These manufacturers had a responsibility to protect their customers from injury using their products. Sanofi, which produced Zantac, and Mylan Pharmaceuticals, Glenmark, and Northwind, produced Ranitidine medications, failed their duty.
The probe began in 2019 when Valisure, an independent lab, discovered evidence of contamination. The FDA and Zantac announced a voluntary recall but as evidence mounted a full recall was issued in April 2020. The CDC announced that NDMA has been linked to a variety of diseases. These include lung cancer, liver cancer, and severe liver disease. The people that used Zantac and had no idea the dangers range into the millions and now some are suffering from cancer because of the drug.
The other potential illnesses associated with NDMA contaminated products include Bladder, Breast, Colorectal/Intestinal, Esophageal, Gastric, Kidney, Liver, Lung, Pancreatic, and Prostate.
We still do not know the long-term effects or how long this contamination had been taking place of a product that millions of people use every day for heartburn symptoms. We also do not know the number of people that have suffered serious health complications.
These manufacturers didn’t do enough to keep their customers safe, and they need to be held accountable for their negligence and the heartache they’ve caused.
