Paraquat Herbicide could cause Parkinson’s Disease

The continued exposure to Paraquat Herbicide for grass and weed control could cause Parkinson’s Disease. Paraquat Herbicide is banned in over 32 counties. These include China and Switzerland where paraquat is manufactured. Since the 1990s, a vast number of studies have shown Paraquat Herbicide has been linked to an increase in the risk of Parkinson’s Disease; and since 2011 it has been found that the risk can increase by as much as 250%. Allegedly the Chinese-owned manufacturer knew about the risks of Paraquat Herbicide but did not warm farmers or others who could be affected by the toxic herbicide.

Besides an increased risk of Parkinson’s Disease, recent studies have shown that breathing or ingesting even small amounts of Paraquat Herbicide can lead to detrimental health effects. The most common side effects of paraquat exposure include–but are not limited to–liver failure, respiratory problems, lung scarring, kidney failure, heart failure, and more.

Paraquat Exposure

Its official name is Paraquat Dichloride, and it is one of the most popular and powerful herbicides used to control weed and grass. It is also one of the most toxic herbicides on the market in the past 60 years as reported by the Pesticide Action Network Asian and the Pacific (PANAP). According to the CDC, even minimal exposure to Paraquat Dichloride can lead to liver failure, kidney failure, heart failure, coma, seizure, or even death. If inhaled even an amount of concentrated paraquat the size of a teaspoon can be lethal.

The most common form of Paraquat poisoning is through skin exposure or inhalation. Paraquat when inhaled can lead to respiratory problems. If Paraquat enters the body (whether that be skin exposure, inhalation, or direct consumption), Paraquat can quickly spread throughout the body. The chemical reaction Paraquat will cause once it enters the body can affect your liver, kidneys, lungs, and the cells within your body. Prolonged exposure can lead to life-long ramifications.

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement. Symptoms start gradually, sometimes starting with a barely noticeable tremor in just one hand. Tremors are common, but the disorder also commonly causes stiffness or slowing of movement.

In the early stages of Parkinson’s disease, your face may show little or no expression. Your arms may not swing when you walk. Your speech may become soft or slurred. Parkinson’s disease symptoms worsen as your condition progresses over time.

Those affected may face severe mental health issues. Prescriptions can cost over $2,500 and surgery can over $100,000.

What Does The Research Say?

In 2009, Beate R. Ritz–a renowned environmental toxin researcher–found that exposure to Paraquat increases the risk of Parkinson’s Disease.

In 2011, a journal associated with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences call Environmental Health Perspectives, found that the risk of Parkinson’s Disease can increase by 250% if you are exposed to Paraquat.

In 2017, the EPA received a letter from the Parkinson’s organizations at the national, state, and regional levels warning them of the link between Parkinson’s Disease and paraquat.

Currently, China-based Syngenta and Growmark, which is the manufacturer of paraquat are being sued by the farmers and agricultural workers who have developed Parkinson’s Disease because of exposure to paraquat.
