Airport Sign Fell and Killed Minor

On March 22, 2013, while walking through a new terminal at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, a large flight information sign weighing several hundred pounds fell and caused fatal injuries to 10-year-old Luke Bresette.

The Bresette family filed a wrongful death suit and named contractors, the architect, and sign company as defendants, which included Brasfield & Gorrie General Contractors and BLOC Global Services Group. Claiming the sign was unstable, the Bresette family has settled their suit and changes have been made.

The sign was taken out and the terminal now has different signs that are all fixed to the floor and the wall. The Birmingham Airport Authority has also offered to commission a memorial likeness of Luke. The Bresette family has promoted the Live Like Luke Foundation, which will help other children affected by tragedy or hardships realize their dreams.
