Texas Needs Answers to Its Day Care Problem

An investigation by the Austin-based newspaper, Austin American-Stateman, has revealed a disturbing trend in Texas child care. For the last 10 years, over 80 children in Texas day care centers died due to both abuse and neglect, and in the same period of time, more than 450 Texas children were sexually abused.

Governor Abbott’s former spokesperson, Ciara Matthews, told the Statesman’s investigator, “Any allegation of child abuse or neglect must be taken seriously, and the governor will not tolerate it in Texas. He will work with the Legislature and key stakeholders to identify strategies and solutions to prevent these tragedies from occurring in the future.” Other lawmakers have issued statements asserting their desire to address the issue in the next legislative session.

Many have floated potential solutions such as a law mandating day care facilities use cameras or a study on the effects the staff-to-child ratio have on the safety of children. David Brown, professor of early childhood education at Texas A&M University-Commerce, told the Statesman’s investigator that he recommends all child care centers hold liability insurance, hoping that the insurance companies will demand a higher standard of care from the day care facilities.
