A former Kappa Alpha Psi member at Stevenson University in Baltimore County has filed a $4 million hazing lawsuit stating that he was beaten so severely that he was hospitalized for a week. The lawsuit alleges that between January and March of 2013, Johnny Powell II suffered through weeks of hazing, beating, and false imprisonment. Powell looked forward to joining the fraternity’s charter class of Stevenson and never imagined that joining meant he would be put through weeks of trauma.
The fraternity members involved in Powell’s hazing event could face up to only a $500 fine and six months in jail. In the upcoming months, Powell plans to testify during a Maryland legislative hearing in efforts to strengthen the hazing laws.
This lawsuit is the second to be filed against a regional fraternity in recent months. In December of 2014, an Alpha Phi Alpha member at Bowie State University filed a $3 million lawsuit against the fraternity for being harassed while he was a pledge during the fall of 2013.
