Increase in Pedestrian and Cyclists Fatalities Prompt “Be Safe. Drive Smart” Campaign by Texas Department of Transportation

According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), traffic accidents resulting in pedestrian and cyclist deaths are increasing across the state. From 2018 to 2022, TxDOT reported an increase in pedestrian deaths by 30% and cyclist fatalities by 28%. In 2022, over 900 pedestrians and cyclists were killed in traffic accidents across Texas. According to the TxDOT reports, one out of every five deaths on Texas roads involve pedestrians or cyclists. A 2023 report by TxDOT showed, in Houston alone, over 1,600 traffic accidents involved pedestrians; and approximately 209 pedestrian deaths resulted from those incidents. In the same year, it was also reported that 25 bicyclists were killed in traffic accidents.

The Texas Department of Transportation is launching a new campaign to promote the importance of following traffic laws and to encourage road safety. The campaign, “Be Safe. Drive Smart,” comes in response to the rapid increase in traffic accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists. The “Be Smart. Drive Safe” campaign aims to end the streak of pedestrian and cyclist deaths on Texas roads. Through the campaign, TxDOT provides traffic safety tips for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. Additionally, TxDOT plans to place walking billboards with safety tips in crash-prone areas across the state.
