Japanese manufacturer Shimano has issued a recall on Ultegra and Dura-Ace 11-Speed Bonded Hollowtech Road Cranksets manufactured before July 2019. These cranksets are commonly found on bicycles sold by well-known brands like Trek and Specialized and may pose a significant risk.

Which Products Are Affected?

This recall specifically includes Shimano Ultegra FC-6800, Dura-Ace FC-9000, Ultegra FC-R8000, Dura-Ace FC-R9100, and FC-R9100P cranksets. These components are crucial for the safe operation of your bicycle, connecting the chain and pedals for smooth pedaling.

Prioritizing Your Safety

If you’ve been injured due to a cycling accident involving one of the affected cranksets, it’s crucial to take action immediately. Shimano recommends that consumers cease using these cranksets and contact an authorized Shimano dealer for a free inspection. If the inspection reveals any signs of bonding separation or delamination, you’ll be provided with a free replacement crankset and installation, helping to prevent further accidents and injuries.

Understanding the Risks

The recall has been initiated for a reason. Shimano has received a worrisome 4,519 reports of cranksets separating, leading to several reported injuries. These injuries include bone fractures, joint displacement, and lacerations, which underscores the gravity of the issue.
