In September, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of infant swings manufactured by HONEY JOY for violating Federal safety standards codified by Congress. The recalled infant swings were made in China and sold exclusively on Amazon.

According to the CPSC, the HONEY JOY baby swings violate the “Safe Sleep for Babies Act” and “Safety Standard for Infant Swings” because the swings are marketed for infant sleep and have an incline angle greater than 10 degrees. Infant fatalities have been known to occur in inclined sleepers such as this, due in part to increased suffocation risk. Inclined sleepers create suffocation hazards because they position babies to fall asleep in a chin-to-chest position, which can dangerously restrict their airways.

The “Safe Sleep for Babies Act” created a nationwide ban on the sale of all dangerous and unsafe inclined sleepers in attempts to create a safer marketplace for parents and save infants’ lives. The Act not only bans the sale of these inclined sleepers, but also the manufacture, distribution, and importation for sale of unsafe sleepers in the United States.

This product is another in a long line of recalls and safety concerns over products sold exclusively over Amazon. Amazon’s lack of adequate oversight allows for unsafe products to easily be sold to unknowing consumers who have no reason to doubt the quality and safety of the products sold on the site.

The baby swings involved in the recall were sold on Amazon specifically from November 2022 through January 2023. Those who are affected by the recall are told to immediately stop use of the product.
