Chrysler has announced a recall of approximately 330,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees due to a potential safety hazard involving the rear coil springs. The recall, filed with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), affects certain 2022 and 2023 Grand Cherokee and 2021-2023 Grand Cherokee L vehicles. Chrysler has identified an issue in which the rear coil springs were incorrectly placed on these models produced between December 2020 and May 2023, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chrysler has determined that the rear coil springs are not inherently defective but installed incorrectly on the affected Grand Cherokees. Of the vehicles impacted, around 114,300 are Grand Cherokees, while approximately 217,100 are Grand Cherokee L vehicles. In response, Chrysler urges owners to take their vehicles to authorized dealerships, where mechanics will inspect or repair the rear coil springs free of charge.

The detachment of rear coil springs while driving poses a significant hazard to both the occupants of the affected vehicle and others on the road. This defect can lead to unexpected crashes and potential injuries for vulnerable road users. Rear coil springs are vital components of a vehicle’s suspension system, responsible for absorbing impact from bumps and supporting the vehicle’s weight on the axles. Experts advise against driving any vehicle with broken or missing rear coil springs due to the associated dangers.

As of May 25, no injuries have been reported in relation to the rear coil springs issue. Chrysler initiated an investigation into the matter on March 3 following a customer’s report of a coil spring detachment while driving a 2023 Grand Cherokee. During the investigation, Chrysler received 17 warranty claims and two customer assistance records related to the problem. The company intends to mail affected Grand Cherokee owners comprehensive information about the recall and potential repairs by July 28. Additionally, Chrysler has stated it will reimburse any out-of-pocket expenses for spring repairs if drivers can provide a service receipt.
