Two pedestrians were killed, and one was seriously injured in a drunk driving accident on Friday, May 19, 2023.

The pedestrians were coming from a nearby bus stop, walking along Rankin Road, west of I-45, at around 1 a.m. when the accident occurred. At that time, a car was driving in the lane nearest to the sidewalk, swerving and striking all three pedestrians. After hitting the pedestrians, the driver continued onto the freeway before returning to the scene later. After returning to the scene, police discovered the driver was intoxicated.

One of the pedestrians, a man in his 20s, died instantly. A second pedestrian, a man in his 40s, was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead. The third pedestrian, a woman in her 20s, was taken to the hospital in serious condition suffering from multiple broken bones.

According to the National Highway Transportation Administration, roughly 13,000 people die yearly from drunk-driving car accidents. The problem is unfortunately common, even when dealing with pedestrians who are not on a roadway. Drivers and pedestrians must be cautious on the roads, given that someone may be driving drunk. It is also important to seek proper representation in the unfortunate circumstance of a car accident involving a drunk driver.
