On May 15, 2023, a tragic work incident occurred at the Marathon Galveston Bay Refinery in Texas City, resulting in the death of one employee and injuries to several others. A fire was reported around 10 a.m. that Monday morning and emergency response crews swiftly arrived at the scene located at 2938 5th Ave S, Texas City, Texas 77590.

Local news helicopters captured footage revealing numerous crews working diligently to manage the situation and prevent further damage. By noon, officials from Texas City provided an update, announcing that the fire had been brought under control and contained within the facility.

Marathon confirmed one employee was killed in the blaze. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Unfortunately, fire events at refineries in the area are becoming a frequent occurrence. Earlier in May, a fire at a Shell facility in Deer Park led to the hospitalization of nine workers and resulted in large plumes of smoke. In March, an explosion and fire transpired at an INEOS Phenol-owned facility in Pasadena, causing injuries to at least one individual.

Safety measures and thorough investigations are crucial to prevent these recurring incidents and to protect the well-being of refinery employees and nearby communities.
