One Dead, Many Injured in Crash East of Austin

At 8:45 p.m. on a Saturday night in early March, 2023, a crash occurred near Elgin, Texas that left one dead and five injured. The crash was so severe that ATCEMS, Elgin Fire, and Star Flight responded to the scene.

When first responders arrived, one deceased person and one other person were pinned inside of one of the vehicles that had been involved in the crash; while three others were injured in the crash. The survivor was extricated. One of the survivors was airlifted by a STAR Flight helicopter to Dell Seton Medical Center with critical, life-threatening injuries. Three others suffered only minor injuries. Investigations into the cause of the wreck remain ongoing.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, in 2021 228.227 billion vehicle miles were traveled in Texas, and in that same year, there were nearly 15,764 serious injury collisions with 19,448 people sustaining a serious injury. In 2021, one person was killed every 1 hour 57 minutes on Texas roads; one person was injured every 2 minutes 12 seconds on Texas roads; and one reportable crash occurred every 57 seconds on Texas roads.
