Proctor and Gamble Recalls 32 Hair Products Due to Benzene, Cancer Risk

Proctor and Gamble, the consumer product giant that manufactures a wide variety of everyday cosmetic and personal care goods from baby care and hair care to skin and personal care, is voluntarily recalling dozens of products that may contain carcinogenic chemical Benzene.

Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), benzene exposure disrupts cell processes such as causing bone marrow not to produce enough red blood cells. The Department of Health and of Human Services has determined that benzene causes cancer in humans and can cause leukemia, cancer of the blood-forming organs, and other fatal blood disorders.

While Proctor and Gamble note that the “vast majority” of its products are not included in the recall, recalled products include aerosol dry conditioner spray products and aerosol dry shampoo spray products—dry shampoos and conditioners—from Pantene, Herbal Essences, Aussie, Waterless, Hair Food, and Old Spice.

If you have been exposed to these products, it’s important to be aware of the following symptoms tied to benzene exposure. Direct exposure of the eyes, skin, or lungs to benzene can cause tissue injury and irritation.

Other symptoms include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Headaches
  • Tremors
  • Confusion
  • Unconsciousness
  • Death (at very high levels)

The recalled products were distributed nationwide in the United States through retail outlets and online. The FDA has advised that consumers should stop using and discard the affected aerosol dry conditioner spray products and aerosol spray products.

This is not the first time that personal care products have been affected by benzene contamination. In the summer of 2021, Johnson & Johnson recalled several aerosol sunscreens from Neutrogena and Aveeno brands for benzene concerns.
