Canyon Furniture Recalls Children’s Five-Drawer Chest

Florida-based Canyon Furniture Co. has issued a recall of its Creekside Kids Five-Drawer Chests due to tip-over and entrapment hazards.

On July 8, 2021, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”) issued a warning notice regarding the recall.  The notice warns that the recalled chests are unstable if they are not anchored to the wall, posing a risk of serious injury or death to children.

The chests in question measure about 43.5 inches tall, 31.5 inches wide, and 18 inches deep and were manufactured between April 2020 and March 2021. They are identifiable by their SKU numbers: 34595035 for the charcoal-colored model and 34495045 for the chestnut version.

The CPSC notice adds that the Creekside Drawer Chest, marketed specifically for children, did not comply with the industry standard for free-standing clothing storage units of this size.

These chests were sold exclusively at Rooms To Go, nationwide and online, and were marketed specifically for children. Canyon Furniture and Rooms to Go are asking that consumers immediately stop using the recalled chests and contact Rooms To Go for a free repair, replacement, or a full refund in-store credit.

Unfortunately, drawer chests like these pose very serious risks to children. Tip-overs of defectively designed chest and dressers have been disturbingly common in recent years, and all too often have ended in tragedy.
