Johnson & Johnson, the manufacturer of popular talc baby powder has lost another case, this time in New York. Several lawsuits have been filed across the country alleging that Johnson & Johnson’s talc-based baby powder causes certain cancers. Thus far, only a handful of cases have actually been tried to a jury.
A New York jury awarded a woman $25 million in compensatory damage against Johnson & Johnson stemming from her use of the popular talc-based powder. Notably, the jury also found that Johnson & Johnson should pay $300 million in punitive damages to punish the company for its knowledge surrounding its actions related to manufacturing the talc-based products and failure to warn consumers of the dangers posed.
The New York case is not the first case in which a jury has determined Johnson & Johnson should be liable for damages. Earlier this year, an Oakland, California jury awarded a woman approximately $29 million in a similar case in which the plaintiff alleged that the talc-powder based products caused her cancer. Johnson & Johnson’s stock shares were down after news of the verdict spread.
Johnson & Johnson said it will appeal all verdicts in which it is found liable. The company continues to deny that its talc-based products are dangerous for use or cause cancer.
