Steps to Take After Being Involved in a Fender Bender

Many vehicular accidents happen every day. At the time of an accident, people are usually in a state of shock and cannot think properly about what they need to do in that situation. If you find yourself in an auto accident, you should follow these steps:

First, pull over and call 911. If you can, get out of the line of traffic and turn on your hazard lights. If there’s any chance that someone is hurt, or you are worried about damage to either vehicle, call the police immediately. Make sure to get a police report at the scene so that it contains the most accurate information.

Second, exchange car insurance information. It’s important that you exchange information in order to be able to contact the other driver’s insurance company to pay for the damages if the other driver is at fault. Also make sure to exchange driver’s license information.

Third, take photos and gather witnesses. Make sure to take pictures of the scene and both vehicles involved in the accident. If there are any witnesses to the accident, get their names and numbers. This will be helpful information to provide to your insurance company and the police and your attorney, if you end up needing one.

Next, file a claim with your insurance company and with the other driver’s insurance company as soon as possible.
