Steering Wheel Issues

Steering wheels are used every single time we drive around town. However, many of us just assume that this critical component on our cars will operate safely. Every day, we rotate them to the left and right to guide our vehicles where we intend for them to go. Not once do we consider the fact that our steering system is comprised of mechanical parts that can potentially fail. Imagine if your steering wheel were to fail, you would have absolutely no control over where your vehicle was heading. While this is a scary thought, you may be telling yourself, “that will never happen!” You may need to think again.

In fact, the Detroit News has reported that Fords Motor Company is dealing with a class-action lawsuit over this sort of issue. The lawsuit states that the company allegedly lied about the integrity of 841,000 Ford Fusions’ steering systems. It has been discovered that the steering wheels on these Fusions can actually separate from the steering column under ordinary driving conditions. This issue is limited to model years 2014 to 2016 of the Ford Fusion. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reported that one complaint has been submitted to them for each of the aforementioned model years.

As consumers in the auto industry, we all trust that the manufacturers that we purchase our cars from are providing us safe vehicles. It will be interesting to see how this lawsuit plays out in court, as it seems that trust may have been taken advantage of by Ford. Next time you get in your car to head from point A to point B, remember to never be complacent with your vehicle’s integrity. Always be alert so that you can react quickly if your car were to fail you.
