Church Bus Accident Kills 13 in Texas

On Wednesday, a church van carrying fourteen members back from a spring retreat was involved in a head-on-collision. The collision resulted in thirteen fatalities. The accident occurred around 12:30 p.m. on U.S. 83 outside Garner State Park, about 75 miles west of San Antonio. Two of the victims were transported to University Hospital in San Antonio for treatment after the crash, however, one of those victims passed away late Wednesday night. One other victim was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center.

Sgt. Conrad Hein of the Texas Department of Public Safety says a pickup truck veered into oncoming traffic and collided with the van. The van belonged to the First Baptist Church of New Braunfels. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

The small bus was a 2004 Turtle Top. The specific model of the bus is unknown at this time. Safety concerns have long surrounded the 15-passenger vans, also frequently used by churches and other groups, with advocates saying they can be difficult to control in an emergency.
