Big-Rig Crash Leaves Motorcyclist Dead and Wife InjuredBig-Rig Crash Leaves Motorcyclist Dead and Wife Injured

A motorcyclist was killed in a big-rig crash on Thursday November 5th, 2015 in Galveston. The collision occurred on the first day of the Lone Star Rally as thousands of bikers were in route to the island city. The biker was said to have collided with the big-rig and was pronounced dead at the scene while his wife was rushed to the hospital.

According to ABC 13 news, “The deadly accident took place at 11:30pm Thursday, the first day of this year’s rally. An 18-wheeler driver traveling on FM 3005 was waiting to turn onto 8 Mile Road, and needed clearance to properly make the turn. Police say the big rig driver began to make the turn from the right shoulder, and while doing so, a motorcycle traveling in the inside lane struck the trailer.”

The accident is still under investigation at this time.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 4,668 motorcyclists were killed and 88,000 were injured nationwide in the year 2013 alone. Texas DPS Director Steven McCraw advises that motorcyclists can take measures to safeguard themselves by ensuring that they have helmets on at all times and also by conforming to traffic laws. He also cautions other drivers to look twice and give motorcyclists adequate space on the roads. These actions can aid in reducing the likelihood of being involved in a fatal crash for both drivers and motorcyclists significantly.
