Abraham Watkins Celebrates 2012 National Hispanic Heritage Month

The law firm of Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Agosto, Aziz & Stogner is proud to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. The firm celebrates this every year and its community, whose food, culture and tradition are woven within the landscape of our great country.

President Lyndon Johnson initially approved Hispanic Heritage Week, which was then extended by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover an entire month. In the United States, National Hispanic Heritage Month lasts from September 15th through October 15th. During this time, people in the community celebrate the heritage, culture and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.

September 15 was chosen as the start date because the Latin Countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua all declared their independence on September 15, 1821. Additionally, Mexico, Chile and Belize celebrate their Independence Day anniversaries on September 16, September 18, and September 21, respectively.

Hispanic Heritage Month also proudly celebrates the presence of Hispanic Americans in North America, which dates back to October 12, 1492 when Christopher Columbus and Spanish conquistadors discovered America. Ranging from, “Alta California in 1776, through the Spanish province of Texas with its vaqueros (cowboys),” the presence of Hispanics in North America can be found on a map of late 18th century North America.
