Court Orders Drunk Driver to Pay $862,118 in Restitution to Victim

As reported by the Galveston County Daily News, a Galveston County Judge accepted the guilty plea of Omar Santana Ortiz who slammed into the car of Sarah Hrachovina Coreas on October 18, 2010, leaving her in a semi-conscious state. With the approval of the family of Ms. Coreas, Ortiz avoided prison time but agreed to pay restitution in the amount of $862,118 to cover Ms. Coreas’ medical bills to date.

Ortiz, whose blood-alcohol level measured 0.19 at the time of the crash, pleaded guilty to a charge of intoxicated assault for the three-car crash in Galveston. He received a 10 year prison sentence but in keeping with his plea bargain, Judge Lonnie Cox probated the sentence, giving Ortiz 10 years community supervision and ordered him to pay restitution to his victim.
