Another Drawer Chest Recall Over Tip-Over Fears

Following its warning notice earlier in the month regarding Canyon Furniture’s Creekside Kids Five-Drawer Chest recall, on July 22nd, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”) issued another alert for another five-drawer chest over similar tip-over and entrapment concerns.

This warning, regarding the Barrington 5-Drawer Chest, cites the risk of serious injury or death to children if the chest is not anchored to a wall. The notice states that the product, imported and sold exclusively by Houston-based Bel Furniture Inc., is unstable and does not comply with the industry standard for free-standing clothing storage units of that size.

The dresser, measuring 49 inches tall, 35 inches wide, and 19 inches deep has already injured at least one child in a tip-over event. The affected dressers were marked with a sticker on the backside, identifying the product as the “Barrington 5-Drawer Chest” from the “Mollai Collection.” Bel Furniture has asked consumers to immediately stop using the chest and contact it for a full refund with the free pick-up of the dresser, or for a free installation of tip-over restraints and says it has begun contacting purchasers directly.

On the heels of the Canyon Furniture recall at the beginning of the month, this notice serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed to children when manufacturers and retailers take shortcuts.  Tip-over accidents can be life-changing for a child, but they are preventable.
