2 Injured in Port Arthur Plant Explosion

At least two workers were injured after a fire erupted Monday night at the Chevron Phillips Chemical plant in Port Arthur. Although the exact number of injured has not been released, it is known that at least two persons were taken by helicopter to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston where they remained in a burn unit as of Tuesday. The extent of their injuries has not been released.

To date the cause of the fire has not been determined, and the investigation could take months to come to a conclusion. Chevron Philips is required to submit an emission event report to the Texas Commission on Environmental Equality within 24 hours of an incident. This report will provide a little more insight as to the cause of the fire but unfortunately will not provide all the answers. The Port Arthur plant produces ethylene which is a chemical that is widely used in the making of plastics and in the production of several retail products and packaging.

This is the second incident to occur since April 2013. In April, an explosion occurred during the turnaround injuring dozens and sending at least eight to the hospital. Attorney Benny Agosto, Jr. of Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Agosto, Aziz & Stogner currently represents 27 workers who were injured at this same plant during the April 2103 explosion.
