On July 31, 2019, dozens of workers were injured in an explosion that occurred at the ExxonMobil Olefins Plant in Baytown, Texas.

After the explosion, a large fire ignited, sending black plumes of smoke into the sky. The fire broke out and burned for more than five hours in the area of the plant that contains polypropylene material. Some victims suffered severe burn injuries.

Baytown is about 25 miles east of downtown Houston, and is home to the ExxonMobil Olefins Plan, the oil refinery and petrochemical complex. Approximately 7,000 people work at the plant.
