Why Is October The Deadliest Month On Texas Roads?

October-road.jpg

It is important to drive safely, obey the speed limit, and avoid distracted driving at all times. A traffic accident can truly happen at any time.

But when it comes to roadway safety in Texas, it appears that October may be the most dangerous month in which to drive.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, in 2014, 2015 and 2016, there were more motor vehicle accident fatalities in October than in any other month:

2016:

  • October: 382 deaths
  • November: 343 deaths
  • May: 338 deaths
  • February: 313 deaths
  • July: 312 deaths
  • March: 312 deaths
  • June: 307 deaths
  • August: 302 deaths
  • April: 300 deaths
  • December: 293 deaths
  • September 291 deaths
  • January: 280 deaths

2015:

  • October: 359 deaths
  • July: 340 deaths
  • December: 319 deaths
  • May: 317 deaths
  • March: 302 deaths
  • June: 301 deaths
  • September: 297 deaths
  • November: 293 deaths
  • January: 281 deaths
  • August: 269 deaths
  • April: 259 deaths
  • February: 241 deaths

2014:

  • October: 353 deaths
  • December: 319 deaths
  • November: 310 deaths
  • August: 304 deaths
  • June: 302 deaths
  • March: 296 deaths
  • April: 294 deaths
  • January: 286 deaths
  • July: 284 deaths
  • May: 281 deaths
  • September: 271 deaths
  • February: 236 deaths

This includes data for all road types, including interstate highways, state highways, farm to market roads, county roads, city streets, tollways, and other roads.

Why are there more accidents resulting in fatalities in October?

While there is no consensus among experts, one factor may be the prevalence of pedestrian-related car accidents on Halloween. Also, Texas has more deer-related car accidents than any other state, and October is prime deer hunting season.

Whatever the reason, it is important for drivers to be vigilant on the roads in October – and all throughout the year.
