Child and Family Awarded $44.5 Million for Paralysis

An Ohio jury awarded a boy and his family $44.5 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit against an Ohio laboratory. The child's parents brought a lawsuit against Athens Medical Laboratory Inc. alleging that a misdiagnosed and improper treatment of an ear infection in turn resulted in a brain infection and ultimately paralysis of a 9 year old boy.

Mother Sues Lab for Son's Death

More than ten years ago, Amy Williams lost her son, Christian Millare, after he suffered a fatal seizure. Ms. Williams has filed suit against Quest Diagnostics, a genetic testing lab, for allegedly misidentifying her deceased son's condition, which ultimately caused his death. Ms. Williams believes her son's genetic condition was misclassified.

Family Sues and Alleges Wrongful Death Against Hospital

Mary Waters and her three children have sued Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center and nursing assistant Felecia Thompson for the wrongful death of Douglas Waters, Sr. The suit alleges that Ms. Thompson struck Mr. Waters on the head, neck, and face while she was trying to calm him during an episode of "delirium and agitation." The suit continues to allege that the assault gave Mr. Waters PTSD, which caused him to not have the will to live, which ultimately led to his death. Ms. Thompson was arrested by police and is facing pending criminal claims for injury to an elderly individual.

Doctor was Accused of Performing Unnecessary Surgery

Cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Christopher Stone, was hired to treat patients for the Medical College of Wisconsin. It is alleged that just before he was to start, another physician informed the dean that there were allegations against Dr. Stone that he had performed unnecessary surgery at another hospital.

Newborn Smothered in Hospital Bed

Monica Thompson has filed suit and alleged that a nurse brought her son Jacob to her hospital bed at Portland Adventist Medical Center to breastfeed in the early hours of August 6, 2012. The nurse placed Jacob next to Ms. Thompson in the bed and left. Approximately three hours earlier, Ms. Thompson, who had a Caesarean section, had been given narcotic painkillers and sleep aids.

Hospital Pays $2.3M in Medical Malpractice Suit

Joshua Jackson was born at home nearly 12 weeks prematurely. He was taken to The Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida. There, according to the lawsuit, nurses improperly inserted a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC), which is a type of intravenous line. The misplaced line remained in place for nearly a week. While the line was in place, Joshua's arm showed signs and symptoms of impeded blood flow. Eventually, "Baby Jackson's left hand was...found by nurses to be shriveled and with black fingertips," according to the lawsuit.

Nursing Home Resident Sues Facility Over Inappropriate Video

Mary McCaughan, 83-years-old, has filed suit in Travis County alleging negligence by Regency HIS of Windsor Duval, LLC and Regency Integrated Health Services, LLC. The suit details that Carlos Alberto Santa Cruz, a certified nurse aide at Windsor Nursing and Rehabilitation Services of Duval, posted videos that show someone smearing feces on her body and face. The lawsuit claims Santa Cruz allegedly photographed Ms. McCaughan's naked body and posted a video on Snapchat showing someone smearing feces on her. According to her son, Ms. McCaughan has advanced Alzheimer's disease and has great difficulty with talking, moving, and cognition.

Family of the Woman Who Died from Flesh Eating Bacteria Settle Case

Carmen Alexander, a 43-year-old school teacher, died Feb. 21, 2012, just two days after being admitted to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Her death was connected to a serious bacterial infection known as necrotizing fasciitis (NF), which can spread quickly through the body, destroying its soft tissue.

Supreme Court Applies Medical Malpractice Law to Handling a Corpse
