A lawsuit was filed recently accusing long time U.S. Figure Skating Coach Richard Callaghan of sexual abuse and alleging that U.S. Figure Skating did nothing to stop it. The lawsuit was filed by Craig Maurizi, a figure skating coach and former student of Callaghan. The suit alleges that the inappropriate and illegal sexual relationship began when Maurizi was a minor, and that Callaghan continued to exploit Maurizi on and off for years. The allegations were first brought to light by Maurizi in an interview with the New York Times in 1999.

A woman has sued the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, as well as her former southwest Houston parish, due to sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of a former youth minister. The woman's lawsuit states that she met with youth minister Ralph Garza to receive counseling for abuse, allowing Garza to be with the woman alone regularly. That suit further alleges that Garza groomed her for months before eventually molesting her. On one such occasion, Garza forced the woman to touch his genitals, and on another occasion, Garza kissed and fondled her. Following the abuse, Garza was arrested and convicted of indecency with a child, and Garza is now a registered sex offender living in Houston.
A Washington state man has filed suit against the Fort Worth Roman Catholic Diocese for the sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of a priest while he was a student at Notre Dame Middle-High School in Wichita Falls. The victim alleges that his seventh grade history teacher, the late Father John Sutton, repeatedly abused him during school hours beginning in 1990. In order to keep the victim from reporting the abuse to the authorities, Sutton repeatedly threatened the victim and lied to him, telling him that the abuse was a "penance" for the victim's sins.
Ten people recently filed a lawsuit claiming they were sexually abused as children by Roman Catholic priests and nuns in central and eastern Montana. According to the Associated Press, the defendants include a priest who was on a board that reviews allegations of child sex abuse for the church. It is the fourth sex-abuse lawsuit filed against the Catholic Church in Montana since last year and the second against the Roman Catholic Diocese of Great Falls-Billings. The ten unnamed plaintiffs are now adults and say the abuse took place from the 1960s to the 1980s at schools, missions, churches and homes.
