A recent study released some very shocking data: Even in 2011, with all of the medical advances and new technology, The Joint Commission Center for Transforming Healthcare estimates that surgery occurs on the wrong site of a patient's body about 40 times a week. These numbers represent a preliminary finding of a project with eight hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers, and are extrapolated to represent a nationwide estimate.

A baby allegedly injured by malpractice during delivery at a public hospital has no right to sue the negligent doctors employed by the hospital. That is the result of a recent ruling from the Texas Supreme Court in Franka et al. v. Velazquez, et al., ___ S.W.3d ___ (Tex. 2011)(1/21/11).
Recently, the Supreme Court reversed its own ruling from just one year before and dismissed a claim brought by a patient in a hospital. In the case of Marks v. St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, ___ S.W.3d ___ (Tex. 2010(8/27/10), the Court overturned its holding in the matter from almost exactly one year earlier.
Rookie doctors will be getting shorter work shifts, along with stricter supervision. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education's board of directors approved new rules on Tuesday for more than 110,000 new doctors being trained at U.S. hospitals. The idea is to improve patient safety and reduce medical errors caused by junior doctors working extremely long shifts.
The Texas Supreme Court recently extended the immunity of public officials to a doctor in his residency at a private medical school. The case was Klein, et al. v. Hernandez, ___ S.W.3d ___ (Tex. 2010)(5/7/10).
