Olympus Under Investigation for Possible Defective Equipment

The company that manufactured the medical devices tied to a deadly "superbug" outbreak in California is being investigated by the United States Justice Department. The Associated Press reports Olympus Corp. of the Americas (an arm of Japan's Olympus Corp.) is being investigated for possible violations of false claims and anti-kickback laws.

As the exploration for oil and gas continues to widen, accidents, injuries, and deaths related to this industry are likely to rise. Serious injuries at offshore sites can be attributed to transportation, falling objects, equipment malfunction, explosions, electrical fires, among other things.

Gas Pipeline Explosion Kills Man in Rusk County

Last Tuesday, a natural gas pipeline owned by Canadian energy giant Enbridge exploded in Rusk County, Texas. Conner Wilson, 32, of Longview, an employee of Thunderhorse Oilfield Services, was killed in the explosion, leaving behind a wife and four children. The rupture that led to the explosion was reported caused when a mulching machine, apparently operated by Wilson, struck the pipeline.

Drilling Boom, Deadly Legacy

The boom that has brought prosperity to Texas has left a trail of death and devastation for many of the more 100,000 workers in oil and gas exploration jobs. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor, in 2012 the death toll peaked at 65,000, which was a 10 year high and nearly 60 percent more than 2011. For 22 years the federal government has failed to implement safety standards and procedures for onshore oil and gas drilling, even as offshore accidents have been on the rise. Rig Malfunction Fatally Injures Oilfield Worker

A oil rig worker from New Mexico was fatally injured after a rig malfunctioned at a Patriot Drilling site in Southwest Texas. Brian Callicoat was only 22 years old and was expecting his second child with his wife when he was fatally injured in the oilfield workplace accident.

Jack-Up Rig Collapse: 89 Construction Workers Injured

While numerous hazards surround workers in the oil and gas industry, a large construction accident this week served as a reminder that the kinds of heavy machinery involved in this industry are inherently dangerous from the very beginning. Eighty-nine workers at a construction yard in Singapore suffered injuries when a jack-up rig partially collapsed underneath them.

Vapors Ignited on Oil Platform, Leads to Fatal Accident

A fire on an oil rig off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico has caused two deaths and led to the disappearance of two other rig workers. In addition, 11 workers were treated for injuries. Some are still hospitalized in critical condition.
