With an increase of self-driving vehicles on the road, drivers are more reliant on the technology those cars offer. But like any other technology that consumers buy, there can be complications that arise as time goes on. Prominent electric car company Tesla is now facing the consequences of not keeping the technology in their older vehicles up to date, specifically the touch screen. The widow and daughter of a 44-year-old Japanese man recently filed suit against Tesla, Inc. after one of the company's Model X cars operating on "Autopilot" crashed into a group of people and vehicles on the side of an expressway near Tokyo, Japan, killing the man. According to the Complaint, the driver of the Tesla, who as relying on the Autopilot system, had dozed off shortly before the crash. When a vehicle ahead changed lanes to avoid the people and vehicles on the side of the road, the Model X failed to detect the group on the side of the road, accelerated, and ran directly into them.
An Ohio man died while using the "Autopilot" feature on his Tesla electric car. Joshua Brown of Canton, Ohio, died from injuries he sustained when a tractor-trailer made a left turn in front of his 2015 Tesla on a highway near Williston, Florida. The car's sensors system failed to distinguish the large 18-wheeler and the car attempted to drive full speed under the trailer. The bottom of the trailer ultimately impacted the windshield of the Model S. The police report said the top of the vehicle "was torn off by the force of the collision." The truck driver was uninjured. Brown had purchased the vehicle in mid-July of 2015.
