Hit-and-run crashes continue to plague our community. Local news organizations have recently reported two such incidents.
A cyclist was killed earlier this week in a hit-and-run collision. It occurred near 10:00 o'clock p.m. on Monday night in the 11,900 block of Veterans Memorial. The man riding the bike was on the shoulder. According to information from the Harris County Sheriff's Office, a vehicle swerved into the shoulder and hit the bike. The rider, apparently between about 55 and 65 years old, was rushed to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the car fled the scene. The car was said by witnesses to be a small four-door. The vehicle may have been a Dodge Neon, and authorities have suspicion that the driver was intoxicated.
Many of us have experienced just how thrilling and addicting it can be to feel the freedom of riding your bike on the blacktop road or a rocky trail. No matter what terrain you chose to ride on, cyclists all share in the experience of the outdoors and open road together. Tragically we lost yet another member of the cycling community. The Daily News, a Galveston newspaper, reported that Jon Trevelise passed away after a long battle with injuries he sustained after being stuck by a motor vehicle.
Late last year, Kimberly Davis, 21, hit a bicyclist while driving and texting near Koroit in western Victoria, Australia, causing the cyclist to suffer a spinal fracture that nearly paralyzed him and required a three month hospital stay. While serious injuries due to driving while texting are an all-too-common occurrence, what garnered media attention in this case was Davis's shockingly callous reaction when being interviewed by police two days after the accident:
Cyclist Isidro Martinez Campos died on April 2, 2014, when a pickup truck hit him shortly after 8pm on a street in Galena Park. The impact of the collision threw Campos from his bike and onto the shoulder of the street. His bicycle remained wedged in the truck's bumper. He was rushed to Memorial Hermann hospital where he died.
