The National Hockey League announced a nearly $19 million settlement with former players who had sued the league over brain injuries suffered while playing. According to the lawsuit, the league and team medical staffs kept the players in the dark over the potential harm they faced. The suit alleged the NHL of failing to protect the former players from head injuries that could lead to the brain disease Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy or warning them of the risks involved.
Concussions happen often and are frequently overlooked as just a simple head impact. Some concussions result even when a person's head is not struck directly but experience a significant blow to the body that causes the head to snap back and forth. What many people do not realize is that a concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Additionally, the injury rate has climbed substantially for these sometimes deadly accidents. Doctors and safety experts say better awareness is needed about the dangers and risks of putting heavier, older model TV sets on top of dressers and other furniture young children may try to climb on. Most injuries are in kids under 5. Head and neck injuries including concussions are the most common.
Tasked with creating stiffer helmet standards to help prevent the rash of concussions in football, board members from the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment said Friday that they need more time and research before coming up with anything concrete. Concussions have become a hot-button issue in recent years as doctors have gained a better understanding of the symptoms and long-term effects. According to the AP, the NFL has been the flash point of the discussion with all those hard hits causing potentially devastating health issues down the road.
