Texas Now Has the Highest Rate of Workplace Fatalities in the United States, as Deaths on the Job Continue to Occur at a Disturbingly High Rate

In Texas, a worker dies at his or her workplace every day. In 2017, a worker in Texas died on the job on average every sixteen hours. These workers died as a result of electrocution, asphyxiation, falls, exposure to toxins, equipment malfunctions, heatstroke, and automobile collisions. Further, in that same year, the workplace death toll was greater than the number of murders in Houston, Dallas, Ft. Worth, and Austin combined, making 2017 the most dangerous year for workers in Texas in two decades.

Worker Killed in Pearland Industrial Accident

Firm Partner Benny Agosto, Jr. and Associate Kelly Woods will be investigating a recent incident involving a worker who was killed in an industrial accident at Houston Tubulars, Inc. on 13600 Hatfield Road in Pearland, Texas. The site is just west of Mykawa Road and north of Broadway. According to a listing for the National Association of Steel Pipes Distributors, Houston Tubulars is a pipe reconditioning company.

Investigation into Young Father's Death at Recycling Plant

In January of this year, the 26-year-old Byron Jones died when he fell into a tire shredder at Genan, Inc., a tire recycling plant in Sheldon, Texas. Genan, Inc. opened their Houston recycling plant in 2014; the company also has recycling plants in Germany and Denmark. According to the Genan, Inc. website, the Sheldon plant is the largest recycling facility in the world, taking in 100,000 metric tons of tires yearly.

Lack of Fall Protection Still on OSHA's Top 10 Most Cited Violations

The 2017 top violations remain largely unchanged from 2016, with fall protection General Requirements at the top of the lost. However, in 2017 "Fall Protection - Training Requirements", is now added to the top 10 list, at number nine.

Teenager Killed in Construction Accident

A 19-year-old female construction worker, Destiny Rodriguez, was killed Monday in a work-related accident in West Bexar County. The fatality was reported around 10:30 a.m. at a construction site in the 13700 block of Portranco Road, according to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.

Tank Battery Explosion Raises Safety Concerns for Oil and Gas Extraction

One worker has died and three remain injured as a result of a recent tank battery explosion in Mead, Colorado. The explosion occurred after the workers completed upgrades to the tank battery. A tank battery is a group of connected tanks that receive produced crude oil from a well. The owner, Anadarko Petroleum Corp., stated that the Mead facility was not in service at the time of the blast.

Nineteen Year Old Woman Dies in Construction Accident in Bexar County

A 19 year-old woman died Monday, January 24, while working at a construction site in Bexar County, Texas. The accident happened along Potranco Road near Texas Research Parkway. Destiny Rodriguez was at the bottom of a fifteen foot hole when a backhoe operator dropped the digger into the hole, hitting and crushing her. She died at the scene. Rodriguez's brother was also working with her at the bottom of the hole, but he had just climbed out to get another pipe when Rodriguez was killed.

Collapsed Scaffolding Results in Death of Three Men

On March 23, 2015, construction workers were working on an 11 story building when the exterior lift system collapsed. Three men died; their families have filed suit against some of the construction companies involved.

Fracking Boom Causes Increase in Traffic Accidents

Studies have shown that the drilling and fracking boom has been a major contributor to fatal accidents for industry workers, and also for vehicle drivers on Texas roadways. Texas currently has one of the highest accident rates of any state in the country.
