On March 17, 2019, a fire broke out at Intercontinental Terminal Co., petrochemical plant in Deer Park.
As the fire spread within the facility, nine of 15 of the plant’s tanks containing pygas became engulfed.
Initially, the fire was put out in the early morning hours of March 20. But 12 hours later, the fire reignited. Crews removed chemicals from the remaining tanks as a precautionary measure, but much damage had already been done.
As a result, dangerous chemical vapors were released into the Houston air, water, and ground. Benzene, a carcinogen, was detected in the air near the incident site. Other chemicals in the tanks included naptha, xylene, and toluene.

Many people living, working, and going to school near the fires reported physical symptoms due to chemical exposure. Some of the symptoms experienced by those affected included:
- Coughing
- Difficulty breathing
- Burning and irritation to eyes, nose, and throat
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Dizziness
