E-cigarettes have become very popular devices over the past several years. Many people use e-cigarettes as an alternative to regular cigarettes, because e-cigarettes do not contain tobacco.

But is vaping truly safe?

There have been many reports of e-cigarettes exploding. These explosions can cause grave injuries or death.

Health Concerns With Vaping

One of the reasons e-cigarettes are so popular is that users can get their nicotine fix without being exposed to tobacco. The devices heat vaping liquid, which releases nicotine.

But the CDC has warned consumers about the dangers of e-cigarettes, which contain other toxic substances.

The CDC reports that e-cigarette aerosols can contain heavy metals, diacetyl (a chemical with a butter-like flavor in consumable products), and cancer-causing chemicals.

So e-cigarettes are truly not a “safe” option. Especially when you consider that these devices are prone to dangerous explosions.

Why Do E-Cigarettes Explode?

Over the past few years, there have been numerous reports of e-cigarette explosions. Many of these explosions occurred when the device was being used or stored in pockets.

The fire and explosion risk from e-cigarettes comes from the lithium-ion battery. In an e-cigarette, the battery powers the device’s heating mechanism, which turns the liquid solution into vapor.

When pressure builds within the device, it can cause the battery to rupture. Because these devices are structurally weak, the explosion can be violent.

Other electronic devices contain lithium-ion batteries – laptop computers, for example. But the batteries in these devices are contained in a strong plastic case. This is not the case with e-cigarettes.

What Types Of Injuries Result From E-Cigarette Explosions?

When e-cigarettes explode, the results can be horrific. Depending on where the device is located when it explodes, it can cause:

  • Serious burns to the hands, mouth, lips, tongue, cheek, throat, chest, leg, etc.
  • Tooth loss
  • Blindness
  • Death

These injuries can cause functional problems, making it difficult to eat or swallow, for example. Also, because the explosions often occur while in use, there can be serious cosmetic damage to the face.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, between 2009 and 2016, 195 e-cigarette fires and explosions were reported. Of those, 133 (or 68 percent) of individuals suffered acute injuries.

Do E-Cigarette Burn Victims Have Legal Rights?

When a product is used correctly, it is reasonable for a consumer to expect that he or she will not be seriously injured. Unfortunately for some electronic cigarette users, this is not the case.

While the injuries caused by these explosions can be severe, it is important for victims to understand their legal rights and options. The manufacturers of e-cigarettes can be held liable for the injuries sustained and monetary losses.

If you have been injured by an exploding e-cigarette, it is advisable to work with a highly experienced attorney. Electronic cigarette explosions are a relatively new threat, and these legal cases can be highly complex.
