A popular earplug manufactured by 3M and used by military servicemembers is known to be defective and has caused hearing damage among many users.
3M’s defective dual-ended Combat Arms TM earplugs were unique in that they were designed to be worn in two directions. Worn one way, the earplugs would block out all sound – worn the other way, they would block out louder sounds, but the user could still hear certain sounds.
Unfortunately, the earplugs are defective. And many military servicemen and women who served between 2003 and 2015 have experienced hearing problems because of them, including:
- Hearing loss
- Loss of balance
- Other ear/hearing problems
The earplugs were manufactured by Aearo Technologies, which was acquired by 3M.

Is 3M Company Responsible For Hearing Damage?
Lawsuits have already been filed against the 3M company for failing to warn users of the earplug defects and for failing to provide proper instructions for their use. Their negligence has resulted in a variety of hearing problems among servicemen and women, including hearing loss, tinnitus, and loss of balance.
The earplugs were used by veterans who served in the United States military between the years of 2002 and 2013.
What Is Tinnitus?
Tinnitus is a condition in which someone hears buzzing or ringing in the ears, despite there being no external sound. One common cause of tinnitus is an ear injury due to a loud external noise, such as gunfire, machinery, aircraft, and others experienced during military service or combat.
The constant perception of sound can have physical and psychological effects. Many sufferers of tinnitus develop anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions, and many report having suicidal thoughts.
Tinnitus is the number one disability claimed by military veterans.
