Mexican-American Bar Association of Texas - August 24th, 2016 - 11th Annual MABATx Foundation Scholarship Luncheon

Houston, Texas – As many lawyers know, law school can be not only demanding of one’s time and energy, but also on one’s bank account. Fortunately, the Mexican-American Bar Association of Texas Foundation (MABATx Foundation) will host its Eleventh Annual Scholarship Luncheon benefitting Hispanic law students. The Luncheon will be held Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at the Double Tree Hotel located in downtown Houston. The scholarships are awarded to outstanding law students who best exemplify leadership, commitment, justice and equality within the Hispanic community and beyond. “It is important that we encourage a new generation of lawyers to not only be great lawyers but to also give back to the legal community,” said attorney Benny Agosto, Jr., Founder and President of the MABATx Foundation, and Partner at Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Agosto, Aziz & Stogner in Houston. Scholarships are awarded to law students from each of the three Houston-based law schools. The MABATx Foundation is a non-profit organization founded to encourage justice and leadership within the Hispanic community.

The MABATx Foundation’s Eleventh Annual Scholarship Luncheon will include a keynote address from the Mayor of the City of Houston, the Honorable Sylvester Turner. As always the luncheon will honor pioneers of the community who exemplify the ideals of the foundation. This year the honorees include: Laura Murillo of the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (Outstanding Service as an Entrepreneur), Dave Ward of KTRK-TV (Outstanding Service in the Media), Judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas (Outstanding Service in the Judiciary), and Chief Martha Montalvo of the Houston Police Department (Outstanding Service as a Public Servant).

It should be an exciting event for all. We look forward to seeing you there!

A Brief History Of The Mexican-American Bar Association Of Texas Foundation

For over 40 years, the Mexican-American Bar Association of Texas (MABATx) has made it its business to provide a forum and a means for lawyers to promote the social, economic, and educational advancement of the people of Texas. In addition, MABATx has strived to serve the Mexican-American populous, and all Hispanics, by providing services, assistance, and advice on matters of legal concern to the community; all the while encouraging respect, fairness, justice and equality.

The Mexican-American Bar Association of Texas Foundation (MABATx Foundation) was established in 2006 by Benny Agosto, Jr., Partner of Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Agosto, Aziz & Stogner in Houston, Texas. Mr. Agosto, a former President of the Mexican-American Bar Association of Texas, seized the opportunity to establish a foundation to benefit Hispanic law students by awarding scholarships to the Houston-based law schools. From the beginning, MABATx Foundation has hosted an Annual Scholarship Luncheon as its principal fundraising effort for the year. Thus far, the MABATx Foundation has raised over $250,000.00 to benefit law students and further the organization’s purpose. The Luncheon is an event that is a great experience for all.

The Annual Scholarship Luncheon honors those individuals in the community that best exemplify the MABATx Foundation’s goals of promoting justice, fairness and equality within the Hispanic community and beyond. Past award winners include: Justice Eva Guzman, Justice David Medina, Honorable Jimmie V. Reyna, Honorable Jennifer Elrod, City Attorney Arturo Michel, Sheriff Adrian Garcia, Harris County Attorney Vince Ryan, Mike Barajas, Lisa Falkenberg, Bill Balleza, Hilton Koch, Chief Eddie Corral, and Houston Astros great Jose Cruz-just to name a few.
