Martinez and Beatriz Arteaga d/b/a Your Style Hair & Accessories a.k.a. Unique Boutique and Hair.
On March 19, 2019, Idania Rivera went to Unique Boutique and Hair salon in Houston, Texas to have her hair lightened. The hairstylist applied Pravana Pure Light Power Lightener hair product and told Ms. Rivera she could go home to pick up her daughter. After driving to her home, with the lightening product still in her hair, Ms. Rivera began to feel a burning pain to her scalp. She immediately drove back to Unique Boutique and Hair and asked the hairstylist to wash out the lightening product. Even after her hair was washed, however, Ms. Rivera’s pain persisted. The pain was so severe that Ms. Rivera had to seek medical attention. She drove herself from the salon to a nearby hospital’s emergency room.
As a result of the Pravana Pure Light Power Lightener hair product, Ms. Rivera suffered third degree chemical burns to her scalp. “A consumer hair product should never cause this type of permanent damage. This product should be investigated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission,” according to Mo Aziz. Hilda Sibrian, attorney for Ms. Rivera, stated “I am deeply concerned for other users of this product after what happened to my client.”
Ms. Rivera will be present at the press conference to answer questions with her legal team on May 1, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. (CST) at the law firm of Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Agosto, Aziz & Stogner, located at 800 Commerce Street, Houston, Texas 77002.
