(Houston, Texas) August 17 – Earlier this week, the Mexican American Bar Association of Texas Foundation (MABATx Foundation) hosted its seventh annual scholarship luncheon at the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Houston.

During the luncheon, several scholarships were awarded to law students from Houston’s three area law schools. The law students receiving the scholarships were identified for their leadership and commitment to justice and equality within the Hispanic community and beyond.

“It is important that we encourage a new generation of lawyers to have the courage and strength to be committed to their clients but also committed to their communities,” said  attorney Benny Agosto, Jr., partner at Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Agosto, Aziz & Stogner in Houston. Mr. Agosto, the founder of the MABATx Foundation, is also the current President of the Hispanic National Bar Association.

In addition to recognizing law students for their contributions to the Hispanic legal community during the luncheon, the MABATx Foundation honored several people in the Houston community for exemplifying the goals and ideals of the Foundation. Honorees recognized for their outstanding service in the community included:

  • Attorneys Chris Garza and Diana Perez Gomez as outstanding Latino/Latina Lawyers Under “40”
  • Entrepreneur Johnny Carrabba, owner of the Carrabba’s Italian Grill
  • Media pioneer Tony Diaz
  • Harris County District Court Judge Josefina Rendon
  • Harris County Attorney Vince Ryan

For 30 years, The Mexican-American Bar Association of Texas (MABATx) has provided a forum and a means for lawyers to promote the social, economic, and educational advancement of the people of Texas. In addition, MABATx has strived to serve the Mexican-American populous, and all Hispanics, by providing services, assistance, and advice on matters of legal concern to the community; all the while encouraging respect, fairness, justice and equality.

The Mexican-American Bar Association of Texas Foundation (MABATx Foundation) was established in 2006 by Houston attorney Benny Agosto, Jr. Mr. Agosto, a former President of the MABATx, seized the opportunity to establish a foundation to help raise scholarship money to benefit Hispanic law students.
