(Houston, TX) Randy Sorrels from the Houston law firm of Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Agosto, Aziz & Stogner took office as President of the State Bar of Texas for the 2019-2020 bar year at the General Session Luncheon during the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting on June 14, 2019. Mr. Sorrels is the 139 th President of the State Bar of Texas and the first President from Houston in 12 years. He will be leading the third largest bar in the United States, which consists of almost 104,000 lawyers.
Mr. Sorrels plans to focus his leadership year on expanding the member benefits programs of the State Bar. “I believe our State Bar can provide more services and benefits to Texas lawyers, which will in turn allow our Texas lawyers to provide more services and benefits to their clients, families, and the public as a whole,” said Sorrels. His goals including adding a new employment feature linking lawyers who need short term contract lawyer help with lawyers who are looking to do contract work, a universal vacation letter, a consistent policy for court continuances surrounding the birth or adoption of children, and administrative relief on small, flat-fee cases. He will continue to work towards a statewide courthouse access badge as well.
Mr. Sorrels has been practicing personal injury and business litigation at Abraham Watkins for almost 30 years and has served as the firm’s Managing Partner for 25 of those years. He has extensive experience representing individuals and family members who have been harmed by serious personal injury, medical malpractice, wrongful death, and business disputes, including “bet the company” cases. He is double board certified in Personal Injury Trial Law and Civil Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, which is a distinction that fewer than .1 percent of attorneys in Texas hold. He has been selected to the Top 100 Texas Super Lawyers list for 12 years, the Top 100 Houston Super Lawyers list for 13 years, and the Texas Super Lawyers list for 16 years. He was also named the Best Lawyers ® 2019 Medical Malpractice Law – Plaintiffs “Lawyer of the Year” in Houston, marking his third year to receive this honor, which is extended to only one attorney each year in the Houston area.
While maintaining a full-time legal practice, Mr. Sorrels has also served in a variety of leadership positions held in professional organizations in Texas. He is a former President of the Houston Bar Association, the Houston Trial Lawyers Association, the Houston Trial Lawyers Foundation, and the Texas Association of Civil Trial and Appellate Specialists. He is also a past Chair of the Fellows of the Texas Bar Foundation and has served on the Board of the Directors of South Texas College of Law Houston since 2013. His leadership achievements have earned him some of the highest legal honors in Texas, which include the President’s Award and Judge Sam Williams Award from the State Bar of Texas and the President’s Award from the Houston Bar Association.
Mr. Sorrels graduated magna cum laude from Houston Baptist University and South Texas College of Law Houston and has a long history of supporting both schools. He has been recognized by Houston Baptist University with the HBU Distinguished Alumnus Award, is a member of the HBU Walk of Honor, and the HBU soccer field is named the Randall O. Sorrels Soccer Field. South Texas College of Law Houston has also honored Mr. Sorrels with The Dean’s Medal, the school’s highest award, the Public Service Award, the inaugural award, and most recently, the Distinguished Alumni Award. The legal clinics at South Texas have also been named The Randall O. Sorrels Legal Clinics and currently house 19 legal clinics for clients to receive help from law students eager to assist under professor supervision.
