4th Annual Text Free Texas Scholarship Program Available To Teens Who Pledge Not To Text And Drive
(Houston, TX) April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and the Houston personal injury law firm of Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Agosto, Aziz & Stogner is once again hosting the Text Free Texas Scholarship Contest to promote safe teen driving. Driving-age students at four local high schools have been invited to participate by submitting pledges to not text and drive during the month of April. This is the fourth year that Abraham Watkins has sponsored the Text Free Texas (#TxtFreeTX) scholarship.
Eligibility For The 2016 Text Free Texas Scholarship Program
Students at the following high schools, grades 10 through 12, are eligible to participate in the contest:
- DeBakey High School for Health Professionals
- Energy Institute High School
- Houston Academy for International Studies
- Jones Futures Academy
The contest begins April 1 to coincide with Distracted Driving Awareness Month. To enter the contest, students must write a pledge of up to 250 words explaining why they will commit to not text and drive. The statement must be submitted to the firm’s Facebook page and include the student’s name, high school, grade, and the hashtag #TxtFreeTX.
After reviewing all eligible pledges, one student from each high school will be selected to receive a $250 scholarship. The four scholarship recipients will be announced during the first week of May.
The purpose of the Text Free Texas annual scholarship program is to raise awareness of the dangers of texting while driving – especially for teen drivers. More than nine people are killed and more than 1,100 are injured in car accidents every day as a result of distracted driving. The most common cause of distraction in these car crashes is the use of cell phones, specifically for texting, emailing, social media, and surfing the web. Teens are particularly at risk for such accidents, as close to half of all high school students 16 years or older in the United Sates text or email while driving.
