Amtrak Train Derails During Its Inaugural Run

During the early morning of December 18, 2017, an Amtrak train derailed during its inaugural run on the newly opened faster route from Seattle to Portland. Onboard the train were 80 passengers, three crew members, and two service personnel. The train was traveling 80 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone as it approached a curve. The train derailed outside Tacoma, Washington from an overpass bridge onto a highway, killing at least three train passengers and injuring over 100 others. Additionally, several drivers were also injured on the highway onto which the train fell. Over 70 people were taken to hospitals following the derailment.

More Fatal Train Collisions in Texas

The Texas Department of Public Safety has confirmed a fatal car accident involving a train in Iowa Park, Texas. The collision occurred at approximately 10:15 p.m. on Friday, October 13, 2017. The collision occurred near the intersection of West Smith Avenue and Johnson Road. The railroad track crosses Johnson Road approximately 25 yards before the intersection with West Smith Avenue. There are retractable railroad gates near the tracks, but it is unknown at this point whether they were activated as the train approached. There is a residential property located near where the collision occurred, but there is no report yet that there were any witnesses. Iowa Park Police and Fire, Wichita County Sheriff's Deputies, Department of Public Safety Troopers, and railroad officials were all called to the scene to investigate. The driver was reportedly operating a Dodge SUV. Unfortunately, the driver of the vehicle has perished.

Bus Passengers Seek $250M After Deadly Train Crash

Fifteen charter bus passengers filed suit following a collision at a train crossing that left forty injured and another four dead. The lawsuit seeks more than $250 million in damages on negligence and product liability claims against the bus, tour, and train companies involved.

New Jersey's Deadly Train Crash

On September 29th, 2016, a train was less than a minute from Hoboken station cruising in below the regulated speed of 10mph when, suddenly and without warning, the train accelerated to 21mph, double the regulated speed and crashed into the barrier at the end of the rail. When the train collided with the barrier it was launched through the wall and into the waiting area, killing one woman and injuring over 100 people.

NTSB Releases Results of Preliminary Investigation into Amarillo Train Crash

On June 28, 2016, two trains barreled into one another near Amarillo, Texas. Each train was carrying two crew members. While one crew member was able to jump to safety, the three others tragically died.
