Distracted Driving Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3,477 people were killed, and 391,000 people were injured, due to distracted driving-related crashes in 2015.

And, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, an average of 9 people are killed, and more than 1,000 are injured each day, in the United States because of distracted driving.

Further, the Texas Department of Transportation reports that there were 109,658 wrecks in Texas caused by distracted driving during 2016. That’s a three percent increase over 2015.

Not surprisingly, out of all age groups, teenage drivers are the most likely to engage in distracted driving.

The CDC describes three categories of distractions while driving:

  • Visual: Behavior that takes the driver’s eyes off of the road, such as looking at a cell phone, or turning around to have a conversation with someone in the back seat;
  • Manual: Behavior that takes the driver’s hands off of the wheel, such as sending a text message, navigating a GPS, or checking the internet;
  • Cognitive: Behavior that takes the driver’s mind off of driving, such as trying to operate a telephone while driving.

Although there are many examples of distracted driving, texting while driving is one of the most dangerous because it impairs a driver in all three categories: visually, manually, and cognitively. Other examples of distracted driving include:

  • Emailing while driving;
  • Using GPS while driving;
  • Using an app while driving;
  • Watching a video while driving;
  • Live-streaming while driving;
  • Eating while driving;
  • Applying makeup while driving;
  • Falling asleep while driving.

Whenever a driver takes his or her focus off of driving-whether through telephone use or another distraction-a collision can occur. When a negligent driver causes a wreck, he or she can and should be held legally responsible for damages caused.
