Around 3:10 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, a crash involving an 18-wheeler and a passenger vehicle occurred in Northeast Houston near the I-610 North Loop at Homestead. Police officials say the collision occurred when the 18-wheeler, hauling a bulldozer, collided with a small Mazda attempting to switch lanes. As a result of the collision, the 18-wheeler lost control and crashed into the middle concrete barrier of the freeway, completely obliterating the barrier. The collision was with such force that it caused the bulldozer to detach from its trailer and tumble into oncoming traffic, striking two vehicles traveling in the eastbound lanes of I-610.

According to the Houston Fire Department, two patients were transported from the scene to an area hospital, where the driver of one of the vehicles was pronounced dead. The driver of the 18-wheeler was also taken to a hospital with a head injury.

As a result of the incident, officials were forced to shut down all main lanes in both directions of I-610 for twelve hours on Wednesday, causing significant traffic delays. The freeway had reopened by Thursday morning, and an investigation is ongoing.
