Tragedy Strikes Marathon Petroleum Refinery: 1 Employee Dead, 2 Injured in Galveston Bay Fire

Shortly after 9:30 am CST on Monday, May 15, a fire broke out at the Marathon Petroleum Refinery in Texas City. According to Marathon officials, workers were performing routine maintenance when a pump deal near them failed, resulting in a fire.

Three workers were rushed to the hospital and unfortunately, one succumbed to their injuries.

Texas City Police released a statement shortly after the fire was contained stating there was no threat to the general public.

Local residents near the plant were still concerned, however, with the city’s lack of communication. There is an emergency alert text system in place when accidents such as this occur, but numerous residents confirmed no text was sent out.

This is the second fatality at Marathon Petroleum this calendar year and comes a little over a week after 9 workers were injured in a Shell Deer Park plant fire.
