LG Television Recalled for Tip-Over Danger

Figure 1 – LG 86-Inch Smart TV and Stand

On January 12, 2023, LG Electronics issued a recall of 52,000 free standing 86-Inch smart televisions and stands due to serious tip-over and entrapment hazards. The recall affects model numbers 86UQ8000AUB, 86UQ7070ZUD, 86UQ7590PUD, and 86NANO75UAQ sold at various retail stores including Walmart, Best Buy, Costco, and Amazon between March 2022 through September 2022.

According to the recall, the television can become unstable while on the assembled stand posing serious tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in injuries or death to children and others. The television weights approximately 100 pounds. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, LG Electronics has received 22 reports of TV stand instability, resulting in 12 reports of tip-overs.

Consumers using the televisions supporting stand legs should immediately detach it and place the television in a safe location away from children. The problem does not affect LG sets that have been wall-mounted.

According to LG the stand is unstable only if it’s installed improperly. According to the company, “when the stand is installed exactly as described in the product instructions, and all provided screws are used and properly tightened, this structural failure does not occur.”
