The Laundress Cleaning Products Recalled Due to Bacteria

Over eight million units of The Laundress laundry detergents, fabric conditioners, and other household cleaning products were recalled due to the presence of bacteria.  The Consumer Product Safety Commission indicated that testing revealed the presence of Burkholderia cepacia complex, Klebsiella aerogenes, and multiple species of Pseudomona. These bacteria can cause serious infections that require medical treatment for people with compromised/weakened immune systems and lung conditions. The bacteria can enter the body through the lungs, eyes, or through an open cut. At least eleven consumers have recorded Pseudomonas infections, and The Laundress is investigating to determine whether there was any connection to its products.

The specific products subject to the recall are The Laundress’ Signature Detergent, Fabric Conditioner, Dish Detergent, All-Purpose Cleaning Concentrate, Glass & Mirror Cleaner as well as several others. The Laundress products were sold on TheLaundress.com and Amazon and at Bloomingdale’s, The Container Store, Saks Fifth Avenue, Target, Nordstrom, Brooklinen, and other major retailers. The Laundress has advised consumers to immediately stop using their recalled products, which were sold between January 2021 and September 2022. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has also said that consumers should throw the recalled product(s) away after receiving their refund by “closing the bottle tightly and placing it in the household trash.” The Consumer Product Safety Commission has further advised consumers against emptying out the bottle before disposal.
