$17M Awarded to Family of Man Killed in Road Construction Zone

In 2019, at approximately 3:00 in the morning, David Sollars, then 54-years-old, was working as a painter during a resurfacing and repaving project. Unfortunately, he was struck by a motorist. He immediately lost consciousness and ultimately died of his injuries. His widow, Shelley Sollars, filed a wrongful death lawsuit. Mr. Sollars additionally left behind three children.

During the two-week trial, jurors heard evidence that Mr. Sollars was struck in a lane that should have been blocked off with orange barrels by the project contractor, Perk Co. It was alleged that the company was responsible for work zone safety. More specifically, it was contended that the lane in which Mr. Sollars was struck should have been blocked off by an electronic arrow board, along with the orange barrels. The jury found the construction company, Perk Co., was in fact liable for Mr. Sollars death and awarded $17 million.
